“What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals.” ~ Henry David Thoreau
What’s Bugging You?
Have you ever had a pestering feeling about the future? You know those, “Some day I’ll” or “Wouldn’t it be great to” thoughts always followed by a heavy sigh.
These are signs of your future goals.
Goals Are What?
“What?” you say. “I thought goals were those painful things you drudge through only to give up a couple weeks in because it’s too hard…like New Year’s Resolutions.
That’s right. The best goals are based around what’s important to you, plain and simple.
Stop Pleasing Others
Clients come to me with, “I should” goals usually established by their boss, parents, or friends on social media. They drag themselves into the office with this heavy burden. You can almost see it dragging behind them. Come on do you really want to achieve something that heavy?
The first thing I do is ask them what prompted them to set that goal. If I don’t see a sparkle in their eye, I know they are trying to please someone else. When they realize this, you start to see the burden shift.
I’m not saying to tell your boss off when you get your sales goals. What I am saying is if it feels like a burden you have two choices. You can find something within the goal that resonates with your true goals or you might think about another job.
Goals need to be associated with what you want. Period end of story. Don’t set a goal a based on another person’s perception of the situation. Focus on what you need.
Fast forward to the end of the story. When you set goals about what’s important to you not only will you achieve them, but you will achieve them faster.
Where Should I Start?
If you aren’t used to knowing what you want, start small. Sometimes the smallest victories are the best. Think about one small think you’d like to achieve. Set your goal with a specific result and a time frame to complete it.
Now get to work. I’ll bet you find you have more time, energy, and focus. You’ll want to work on your goal rather than dreading it.
Ready to start? Feel free to let me know what your goal is and how you are doing with achieving it.
