Play To Win: A Lesson from Tom Brady and the New England Patriots

Play To Win

“I think that at the start of a game, you’re always playing to win, and then maybe if you’re ahead late in the game, you start playing not to lose. The true competitors, though, are the ones who always play to win.” ~ Tom Brady

Superbowl Champions – The New England Patriots

Good morning from Patriot’s Nation! What an incredible football game last night. I admit when you live steps away from the stadium, you think of this amazing team as your neighbors, so it was nice to see the hometown boys win.

Never Accepting Defeat

What struck me, and probably everyone else, was the outstanding comeback.  Heading into the fourth quarter.  Down by what the experts said was an impossible comeback. Then WHAM 34-28 win.

I can only imagine what was going on in Tom Brady’s head.  Looking at images this morning, you never see defeat.  You see determination. Not an angry or even fierce energy.  Instead a calm, “what can I do next” energy.

This is a lesson we all need to learn.

Play to Win

As Tom says above, we all start off strong. Whether it is growing our business, losing weight, finding a new career. We are excited. We are ready.

Then when the road gets tough, we back off. We play to lose instead of play to win. That is not a Patriot or Tom Brady move. It won’t get us to the finish line. It won’t allow us to grow.

This week, once again I ask you to go back to your goals. They can be personal, professional or business. Review your goals.

Where you stand? Have you already given up? Do you need to rethink the plan? Make a commitment to review those goals as often as possible, no less than once a week.

Take a lesson from the New England Patriots, Tom Brady, and even the Budweiser commercial.

Have a dream. Hold onto that dream no matter what. And, when the going gets tough, don’t give up.  Instead come up with a new strategy that moves you forward.

Congratulations to the Superbowl LI champs, the New England Patriots!
